1.FC Kaiserslautern advanced to the round of 16 in German cup play Wednesday night, with a 1-0 road win against fellow second division side Greuther Fürth.

Simon Simoni started as keeper for the Red Devils who got off to a fast start. Marlon Ritter stole the ball from the Fürth defense and sent a long ball into the box that reached Naatan Skyttä. Fürth keeper Silas Prüfrock stopped the ball, but Skyttä netted the ricochet for the 1-0 lead.

That was all the two-time cup winner would need, as both teams struggled offensively. The few scoring chances on both sides were either stopped by the keepers or missed the target.

The draw for the round of 16 is on Sunday, the games will be played on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3. There are 10 first division and six second division teams still in the mix for the cup final on May 28, 2026 in Berlin.

Next the team travels to Düsseldorf for a Sunday afternoon league game. The Red Devils go into the weekend in fifth place with 19 points. Fortuna got off to a bad start, which cost coach Daniel Thioune his job. Former FCK coach Markus Anfang hired on, but things have not got much better for Düsseldorf.

After losing the first two league games under Anfang, Fortuna finds itself in 13th place with 10 points. They also lost their cup game last night to Freiburg.

The Red Devils can count on plenty of support on Sunday, with more than 7000 fans heading to Düsseldorf.

Kaiserslautern welcomes Hertha BSC Berlin to the Betzenberg Nov. 8, for a Saturday night game.
