The Red Devils’ home winning streak ended Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 tie game against 1. FC Nuremberg.
After winning the first four home games of the season, FCK and the 48,000 spectators at Fritz Walter Stadium were hoping for another three points against the longtime Bundesliga second division side.
1. FC Kaiserslautern coach Torsten Lieberknecht had to replace Fabian Kunze in the lineup after his fifth yellow card of the season last week. Semih Sahin, who missed much of the week’s practice due to illness, was able to play, but Kim Ji-Soo and goal-getter Ivan Prtajin were not in the lineup because of injuries. Lieberknecht sent Krahl, Gyamfi, Sirch, Robinson, Joly, Aremu, Sahin, Haas, Ritter, Skyttä and Hanslik onto the pitch to start the game.
It got off to a bad start for the Red Devils when Mika Haas fouled Tim Drexler in the box. After a review, referee Sören Storks gave Nuremberg the penalty. But Julian Justvan failed to convert, and the game remained scoreless.
As the half wore on, scoring chances by either team were a rarity. But shortly before the intermission, Daniel Hanslik took advantage of a Nuremberg mistake and shot a left footer into the bottom right corner of FCN’s goal for the 1-0 lead.
Kaiserslautern got off to a better second half start when Florian Kleinhansel, who had replaced Haas in the lineup, fired off a good shot in the 51st minute, but FCN keeper Jan Reichert made the stop.
Neither team got much going on offense and it looked like the Red Devils would win their fifth home game of the season.
But in the 89th minute, Jan Elvedi fouled Luka Lochoshvili in the box, and after further review, Storks again called a penalty against FCK. This time Nuremberg captain Robin Knoche converted for the 1-1 final score.
The tie leaves Kaiserslautern in fifth place with 19 points after 10 games. The tie did not do the Club much good, it remains mired in 15th place with nine points, two ahead of Dresden in the relegation spot.
The Red Devils travel to Fürth for a Wednesday 6 p.m. German cup game against Greuther Fürth. The team plays its next league match in Düsseldorf on Nov. 2, before returning to Fritz Walter Stadium on Nov. 8 for a Saturday night game against Hertha BSC Berlin.
