(Stars and Stripes)
Division I
Humphreys Blackhawks
Head coach — Daniel Limmer, second season.
Key performers — Joey Brown, Jr., distance; Annelise Parker, Jr., distance; Haley Mitchell, Sr., middle distance; Jordan Johnson, Jr., jumps; Ammon Allen, So., distance (KAIAC cross country champion); Joshua Canion, Sr., throws, sprints.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Blackhawks must fill the shoes of Cassandra Jarzabek, record-setting distance runner who transferred to Belgium, among others who graduated or transferred. Sprints need retooling. Good distance core. Keep an eye on Johnson in the long and triple jumps.
Kadena Panthers
Head coach — Sergio Mendoza, returns after 15-year break.
Key performers — Alexzander Hye, Ur., sprints, jumps; Antonio Webster, Jr., sprints, relays; Navoni’ Perry, Jr., sprints, jumps; Braylon Stephens, Sr., throws (transferred from Matthew C. Perry); Maddie McKinney, So., throws; Dylan O’Neal, Jr., sprints; Jeremiah Williams, Sr., distance; Brock Oliver, Sr., distance; Troy Hill, Jr., throws; Mia Rigg, Jr., middle distance; Mia Clark, Fr., distance; Daniel Dowadu, Jr.; Derryck Miller, Jr.
Outlook — Contending. More than 140 athletes tried out. Panthers customarily have one of the more balanced teams in D-I. A run at the Far East boys, girls and overall school banner is definitely possible.
Kubasaki Dragons
Head coach — Joshua McCall, third season.
Key performers — Ryan Hater, Sr., sprints, middle distance, relays; Maurice Brown, Jr., jumps; Savannah Stewart, Fr., sprints; Isaiah Thompson, Sr., throws; Jayla Williams, Sr., throws; Cameron Eavers, So., throws; Dominic Paul, Jr.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Good number of veterans hoping to build on past successes. Hater appears to be almost all the way back from a hamstring injury last season, as is Paul from a similar injury two years ago. Quite a few new faces and unknowns as a result. Replacing record-setting jumper-hurdler Carlos Cadet will be a challenge.
Nile C. Kinnick Red Devils
Head coach — Luke Voth, 13th season; Tony San Nicolas, 11th season.
Defending Far East Division I boys and girls team champion.
Key performers — Taishi Boyd, Sr., sprints, hurdles; Erica Norman, So., sprints; Justice Owens, So., sprints; Robert Parker, Sr., hurdles, jumps; Annabelle DuBose, Sr.; Roman Miller, Jr., distance; Caleb Minting, So., distance; Emmett McNamara, So., distance; Lauren Cabradilla, Sr., distance (Far East D-I cross country champion).
Outlook — Rebuilding. Plenty of young talent, especially in the distance events, but depth is lacking. On the plus side, Kinnick now has its own track, but still has to practice throwing off base.
Division II
Robert D. Edgren Eagles
Head coach — Tim Schwehr, seventh season.
Key performer — CinCere Davis., Sr., middle distance; Nina Johnson, Sr., distance; JeShawn Spaights-Pace, Sr., jumps; Alexia Kuhn, Jr., distance; Isabella Lyon, Jr., distance; Ren Dick, Sr., jumps.
Outlook — Reloading. Small team this season, not a great deal of depth. Boys high jumps will be an event to watch.
Matthew C. Perry Samurai
Head coach — Melissa and Maurice Cole, first season.
Key performers — Jeremiah Wardrobe, Sr., middle distance, relays; Xavier Mitchell, Sr., distance; Hannah Jernigan, Sr., distance; Ka’Leila Clark, freshman, sprints, jumps; Kelton Clark, Sr., throws; Lucas Hendra, Sr., sprints, relays (transferred from Nile C. Kinnick).
Outlook — Rebuilding. Good balance, not much depth. Senior heavy. Keep an eye on Wardrobe and Jernigan. Perry hosts Far East for the first time.
Zama Trojans
Head coach — Shawen Smith, fifth season.
Key performers — Paula Adams, Sr., sprints; David King, Sr., sprints, relays; Robert Baulsir, Sr., throws; Gabriel Simpkins, Jr., sprints; Emma O’Flynn, Jr., throws (transferred from Matthew C. Perry).
Outlook — Reloading-contending. Good group of sprinters and throwers. Boys definitely in the running.
E.J. King Cobras
Head coach — McKimzy Best, first season.
Key performers — Kiana Scott, So., middle distance; Rose Johnson, Jr., sprints, throws; Jeremiah Wimberly, Jr., sprints, jumps.
Outlook — Rebuilding-reloading. Ranks are thin, but there is talent among the numbers. Best comes over after decades of coaching softball.
Yokota Panthers
Head coach — Bianca Reed, first season.
Defending Far East Division II school champion.
Key performers — Camille Dixon, Sr., sprints; Matthew Rowland, Sr., distance (two-time Far East D-II cross country champion); Baron Reed, Jr., sprints, middle distance; Madeline Frost, So., distance; Nathaniel Cedeno, Sr., throws; Isaiah Cedeno, Jr., throws; Tavia Jean-Luis, Jr.; Barrett Reed, So., middle distance; Landon Wright, Sr., jumps.
Outlook — Contending. Another lineup with good balance in all skills. Frost and Rowland bring Far East cross-country championship pedigree to the distance corps.
Daegu Warriors
Head coach — Imari Manning, first season.
Key performers — McKenzie Andrews, Sr., middle distance; Jaxon O’Connor, Je., hurdles; Ccameron Bedford, Jr., sprints.
Outlook — Rebuilding. Daegu’s numbers have climbed; up to 35 athletes in the first days of practice, about 12 more than last year. Some of them have done track before. Could take home some points from Far East.
Osan Cougars
Head coach — Cornell Jones, third season.
Key performers — Branden Ferguson, So., distance; Emily Smith, Sr., middle distance, relays; Amani Daniels, Sr., sprints, long jump; Ariela Millan, Jr., sprints; Ellie Helphinstine, Fr., hurdles, relays; Kemora Nash, Jr., sprints; Jordin Chapman, Fr., sprints; Anthony Ford, So., throws; Zavier Jones, Sr., throws; Jaydem Powell, Jr., middle distance (transferred from Ramstein).
Outlook — Reloading, possibly contending among a solid girls group. Good core of returners and some skilled performers among newcomers and freshmen. Ferguson is accomplished in cross country as well.
