Washington, D.C., Nov. 11, 2009: A visitor to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., looks at wreaths placed during a Veterans Day ceremony on a rainy Wednesday. Each of the stars in the background represents 100 American servicemembers killed during World War II. November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day - the day all fighting ended on the fronts of WWI - with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…” The day was declared an official federal holiday in 1938 and was initially known as a day set aside to honor WWI veterans. In 1954 the name was changed to Veterans Day by Congress at the urging of a number of veterans service organizations, to become a day to honor the veterans of all wars. Kadena, Okinawa, March 21, 1958: Miss Haruko Ota, a third grade teacher, peeks over the shoulder of Brenda Sheets, 10, daughter of Master Sgt. and Mrs. W. G. Sheets, as pupils with the right answer raise their hands in their Kadena Air Base fourth grade classroom. Around them a group of Okinawan teachers and parents look over the shoulders of the pupils. Forty-nine Okinawan educators got a first-hand look at American educational methods and were surprised that American students "feel so much at ease in school." The group toured the Kadena Air Base Dependent Elementary School in a visit sponsored by the Ryukyuan-American Community Relations Committee. Camp Kaiser, South Korea, December 1958: Lynne Kaelber (seated) and Didi Hasson (standing) chat with two of the men of the 7th Military Police Company at Camp Kaiser. The two women are American Red Cross workers who travel around South Korea to deliver coffee, donuts and some human interaction to American and allied troops stationed in Korea. Colloquially known as the "Donut Dollies," the American Red Cross started - at the request of the U.S. government - refreshments at railroad junctions for military on troop trains. By the end of the war, the Red Cross operated some 700 fixed canteens, many operated by several of the 55,000 women Red Cross volunteers. The service again mobilized in World War II, creating clubmobiles using single decker English Green Line buses, outfitting them with coffee and donut machines and a lounge in the back. Staffed by three American Red Cross volunteers, their aim was to bring a taste of home to the front lines. The service was resurrected again during the Korean War, during which some sources say they earned their enduring nickname, but became most visible during the Vietnam War when between 1962 and 1973 the "Dollies" logged over 2 million miles by jeep, deuce-and-a-half, and helicopter, but - according to the Army Historical Foundation - did not pass out a single donut. Lop Buri, Thailand, Feb. 9, 2009: Smoke grenades cloud a mock United Nations humanitarian relief distribution station under attack in Lop Buri, Thailand, during a training drill for Cobra Gold ’09. The joint, multinational exercise which ranges from amphibious assaults to humanitarian evacuations was held at more than a dozen locations across the Thai kingdom and involved nearly 7,000 U.S. troops who were joined by more than 4,000 others from Thailand, Japan, Indonesia and Singapore. The 28th Cobra Gold exercise had two objectives: to teach coalition warfare and provide tactical training.
