Aboard the USS Oriskany off the coast of Okinawa, June 28, 1955: Crew members of the USS Oriskany examine the crushed remains of the Banshee jet that crashed into the fantail of the attack aircraft carrier on June 22. The Navy Banshee - coming in for a landing that day - slid into the groove blinking its wing lights as it dipped for a landing. The landing signal officer with his electrically-lighted paddles began to guide it in – then hurriedly waved the paddles over his head as he saw the Jet sinking too low for a safe landing. It was too late. The jet flamed out. A wing dipped, and the Banshee, piloted by Lt. (jg) John R. Mitchell of Quincy, Mass. Plowed into the fantail at 125 miles an hour. As high octane gas flamed into the night sky and the ship's fire crew ran to put them out, his fellow pilots gathered to remember Lt. Mitchell. Then, the phone rang. Tokyo, Japan, Apr. 18, 1964: Crown Princess Michiko addresses a corps of collegiate interpreters who volunteered for the 1964 Paralympic Games in Tokyo at the Japan Red Cross Auditorium. The Tokyo Paraylmpics are slated for the week of Nov. 8 at the National General Athletic Grounds. Athletes will represent 34 countries. An Khe, South Vietnam, December 1966: Author John Steinbeck, 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature recipient, sits on a little green trunk as he answers questions from the men of the 1st Air Cavalry Division at An Khe, South Vietnam. Steinbeck visited Vietnam to learn and write about war. Asked about a question raised by a popular US magazine, "Is the U.S. locked in a hopeless war?" Steinbeck answered "All wars are hopeless, but all of the wars have been necessary and this one is also necessary." Steinbeck's son, John, was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1965 and was in country at the time of his father's visit. Craig Field, South Korea, Sep. 13, 1958: Cavalier back Ronald Vierra (14) enters touchdown land and scores six points for his team in game with Osan AB. The visiting Osan eleven proved no match for the 1st Cav. team, and the Cavaliers downed the visiting team 28-14, in the opening game of the All-Korean Football Conference. The game was part of a full day of activities on the division's 37th birthday that included dedication of Craig Field. The 1st Cav. was activated as a Regular Army division at Ft. Bliss, Texas, September 13, 1921. Pictured here is a scan of the original 1958 print created by Stars and Stripes Pacific's photo department to run in the print newspaper. The red marks indicate the crop lines. Only the middle part of the image would appear in the newspaper. As the vast majority of pre-1964 Stars and Stripes Pacific negatives and slides were unwittingly destroyed by poor temporary storage in 1963, the prints developed from the late 1940s through 1963 are the only images left of Stripes' news photography from those decades – with the exception the negatives of some 190 pre-1964 photo assignment found recently. Tokyo, April, 1971: Mahalia Jackson, considered by many to be the best American gospel singer ever, talks to a reporter at her hotel a few hours after she performed for Empress Nagako and other members of the Japanese imperial family. Jackson sang at many important events in American history, including the Kennedy inauguration, the 1963 March on Washington, and the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. At the March on Washington, she preceded Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech with the spiritual, "I Been 'Buked and I Been Scorned."
