Kyoto, Japan, March 1955: The Otorii - the gateway to the Heian Jingu Shrine - in Kyoto, Japan as it was in March 1955. The torii (gateway to a sacred ground) is on of the largest in Japan, standing 24.4 meters (78 feet) tall and leads to the Oten-mon Gate - the front gate of the Heian Jingu Shrine. For years Stars and Stripes pre-1964 negatives were thought to have been lost - that is until several months ago when a small batch of them was found. This 1955 image taken by Stars and Stripes photographer Neil E. Callahan is one of seven we found, all taken in and around Kyoto in late February or early March 1955. They are the oldest negatives we found to date in our Pacific Stars and Stripes archives. RAF Alconbury, England, July 2, 2006: Fireworks brighten up the night sky as onlookers admire the spectacle in front of RAF Alconbury’s commissary.

Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 14, 1964: U.S. team member and Army Sgt. Mel Pender (right) wins his qualifying heat in the men’s 100-meter sprint. Due to an injury sustained off-track, Pender would finish sixth in the final, collapsing from pain from the torn muscle in his side after crossing the finish line. Pender would go on to win Olympic gold at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Although he again finished sixth in the 100m, he won gold in 4×100m relay with Charlie Greene, Ronnie Ray and Jim Hines. Together they set a new world record of 38.24 seconds. He would go on to serve with distinction in the Army. Having enlisted in 1954 at age 17 he served the first 11 years with the 82nd Airborne Division, before graduating from Officer Candidate School in 1965. Sent to Vietnam for several tours, was awarded a Bronze Star and eventually became the head track coach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, before retiring from service in 1976 at the rank of Captain. John Gudzelak, 23, left, and Justin Griffin, 19, members of a route-clearing patrol with the 10th Mountain Division, joke around after their armored vehicle was struck by a bomb set off by a trigger man in the hostile Tangi valley of eastern Afghanistan's Wardak province earlier that day. The mine-sweeping vehicle was damaged but its armor was not penetrated by the blast, and the two soldiers were knocked out but not badly hurt. Berlin, April 1, 1987: Soviet guards pose for a photo as they prepare to end their tour of duty at Spandau Prison. For the past 21 years, the prison's sole occupant was loopy Hitler henchman Rudolf Hess; the task of guarding him was rotated among troops from the U.S., France, England and the Soviet Union on a monthly basis. After Hess' death later in 1987, the facility was torn down.
