Sandy Colton ©Stars and StripesJapan, 1954: On the evening before graduation from a two-week survival course, Army flight nurses cook chickens simulating the pheasants they might find in the wild. During the course the nurses learned to build improvised shelters, and to trap, clean and cook animals. One nurse said that the rugged training in the field was "the first time in my life I ever felt like a pack horse."
