The Marines of 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment, 1st Marine Division, along with South Vietnamese and South Korean troops, were taking part in Operation Pipestone Canyon, aimed at destroying enemy fortifications, bunkers, tunnels and supply areas on Go Noi Island.
