More than 20,000 soldiers (and a few canines) took part in the event, at which USAREUR commander Lt. Gen. Clarence Huebner announced his retirement. "We of the 1st Division are without peer in the Army, there can be no doubt about that," said Huebner, who commanded the division during World War II. "We are without a peer in the world."
