Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, April 23, 2008: Two Afghan men and a group of boys gather at the Gowerdesh Bridge after U.S. and Afghan government troops had taken control of it. The bridge controls a key border crossing with Pakistan, only a few kilometers away, and had been in enemy hands since last August. By taking the bridge, U.S. troops with the 173rd Airborne Brigade will be able to restart efforts to improve the main road into the province, which should bring development into the region and give young men an economic alternative to fighting as insurgents.
