Nishiarai, Japan, July 26, 1955: The 200-year-old Arai Daishi Temple bell came home to Adachi ward in Japan after being displayed for 10 years in Pasadena, Calif., as a war trophy. During the dying days of World War II, the bell was donated to a munitions scrap drive and finally wound up in the ruins of a naval depot at Sasebo where it was discovered by the crew of the USS Pasadena. They presented it to the West Coast city.
