Asadabad, Afghanistan, Oct. 4, 2004: A local boy bicycling home from English lessons rides past soldiers with the 82nd Airborne Division, who were securing a bridge near Asadabad Firebase during preparations for Afghanistan’s first presidential election.

Locals greet the soldiers — newly arrived from Fort Bragg, N.C. — with everything from smiles and waves to hostile stares. However, even in this Taliban stronghold, there are few attacks against reconstruction teams.
