Nangalem, Afghanistan, Oct. 12, 2004: An MK-19 gunner rakes a hillside with 40-mm grenades during fighting in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

Special forces teams, not conventional units, do most of the fighting in remote areas. The teams fight by gaining intelligence through cultivating relationships with local leaders, then hunting down bad guys.
