Konar Province, Afghanistan, Oct. 14, 2008: Sgt. Adam Connaughton keeps watch on a U.S. soldier badly injured by a roadside bomb. The soldier had few external injuries but likely suffered serious internal head trauma, medics said. Three other soldiers were killed in the blast.

It has been a year of hard fighting at many of the U.S. outposts scattered in northeastern Afghanistan, and the medevac platoon has been there for the worst of it.
