Naples vs. Sigonella
The matchup between Italy’s largest DODEA-Europe high school and its smallest is rarely the mismatch the numbers suggest.
As of enrollment reports on Sept. 22, Naples has 341 students in grades nine through 12, while Sigonella has just 132 in those same grades. That puts the Naples Wildcats in Division I and the Sigonella Jaguars in Division III for athletics.
But when they meet, as they will this weekend in three of DODEA-Europe’s five fall sports, the smaller Jaguars often hold their own.
That should be particularly true on the volleyball court Saturday. The Jaguars are the defending Division III champions and hold a 3-3 overall record, including a pair of wins over Division II Aviano and a defeat of small-school rival Alconbury.
But Naples will be formidable this weekend as it eyes a deep Division I tournament run later this fall. The Wildcats are 4-1 on the season with only a loss to defending Division I champion Stuttgart marring their strong start to the fall.
