Hohenfels at Aviano

The Aviano Saints have a lot at stake this weekend. And that fact alone is a sign of the program’s remarkable season-to-season turnaround.
After bringing up the rear as Division II’s only winless team a year ago, Aviano enters this season’s third week as the only unbeaten team in the division’s South region. The 2-0 Saints are one of just three undefeated teams in the 10-team division, and one of just five without a loss among DODEA-Europe’s 16 programs.
A win over the visiting Tigers on Saturday would secure a .500 season for the Saints; wins in their next two games, including a Sept. 30 visit to Baumholder, would clinch a winning season and a likely berth in the semifinals.
Coach Rick Dahlstrom offered a simple explanation for the team’s success.
“Our young kids from last year have improved,” Dahlstrom said. “A few new kids have contributed in a big way.”
All told, that’s led to big improvements for Aviano football.
