Vilseck at Stuttgart
The Ramstein Royals established themselves as the team to beat in Division I softball with a dominant 20-0 and 18-2 sweep of reigning champion Stuttgart on April 15.
But there’s another contender that hasn’t had its shot at the Royals: the Vilseck Falcons. Vilseck’s scheduled set against Ramstein was rained out and rescheduled for the final weekend of the regular season.
If that will be the true test of Vilseck’s viability as a contender, this weekend’s set against Stuttgart could be considered a prerequisite. And the Falcons seem to have what it takes to pass.
Vilseck was the clear standout team of last weekend’s four-school gathering at Vicenza, beating Naples and the host school twice apiece by no less than a seven-run margin. Only a doubleheader split with Division II/III Hohenfels mars Vilseck’s record. If that holds true through a busy weekend featuring a Friday set at Wiesbaden and Saturday’s trip to Stuttgart, the Falcons will enter their date with the Royals a significant threat to Ramstein’s spring-long dominance.
