USS Springfield arrives at its new San Diego homeport from Guam

The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Springfield arrived this week at its new homeport of Naval Base Point Loma in San Diego from its former home at Naval Base Guam.

Springfield will join the three Los Angeles-class submarines already assigned to Submarine Squadron 11 — USS Scranton, USS Hampton and USS Santa Fe.

“We are excited to welcome Springfield to San Diego and the warfighters of Submarine Squadron 11,” said Capt. Phillip Sylvia Jr., the commander of Submarine Squadron 11. “The crew brings extensive knowledge and experience from their forward-deployed presence, and we look forward to continuing to increase our readiness and capabilities with another apex predator on our waterfront.”

The homeport shift follows the recent departure of USS Alexandria from San Diego. The Los Angeles-class submarine transitioned to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton on Naval Base Kitsap, Wash., for inactivation, decommissioning and eventual recycling.

Springfield arrived in Guam in March 2022 and has since completed multiple missions. Most recently, Springfield returned to Naval Base Guam on May 31 following what the Navy said was a routine deployment in the Western Pacific.

Cmdr. Greg Storer, Springfield’s commanding officer, said the crew was ready to serve from its new homeport.

“We look forward to joining the San Diego submarine team and continuing to operate whenever and wherever we are called upon,” Storer said.

Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered submarines are designed for stealth, speed and multirole operations.

Springfield was launched on Jan. 4, 1992, and commissioned on Jan. 9, 1993. It is the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name, which honors the cities of Springfield, Ill., and Springfield, Mass.
