The death of a sailor this month at Naval Station Great Lakes is under investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Navy has confirmed.

“The Navy mourns the loss of our shipmate and sends condolences to the sailor’s family, friends and fellow sailors during this difficult time,” the service said in a statement.

Seaman Apprentice Joshua Jones, a student at Surface Combat Systems Training Command Great Lakes, Ill., was found dead on Feb. 8 around 12:15 p.m., the Lake County Coroner’s Office said in a statement.

The Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Fire and Emergency Services and Great Lakes Police Department responded to a medical call in a barracks. First responders arrived and found the 19-year-old unresponsive. Despite life-saving efforts, Jones was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner’s office said.

The coroner’s office is awaiting toxicology testing and cardiac pathology reports, but suicide is not suspected, according to the statement.

Jones, originally from Florida, enlisted in March 2025.

Grief counseling services and support are available through Surface Combat Systems Training Command Great Lakes and the base chaplain, the Navy said.
