Philadelphia celebrated the Navy’s 250th birthday with a city parade and a “Victory at Sea” concert, continuing a week of events honoring the Navy and Marine Corps.
The Navy’s official birthday is Monday, and the Marine Corps celebrates on Nov. 10. As the birthplace of both services, Philadelphia is hosting events throughout the week to honor their legacy.
The U.S. Navy Band performed at Philadelphia City Hall and marched through the city’s streets Monday. During the event, the Navy and Marine Corps flags were raised in front of City Hall, and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle delivered remarks.
As part of the services’ joint celebration, Patti LaBelle headlined the “Victory at Sea” concert with the U.S. Navy Band and U.S. Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps at Temple University on Sunday. The event was originally planned to be held outside at Independence Mall, but was livestreamed indoors due to the weather.
Despite the government shutdown, the flagship celebration will continue with more events in Philadelphia from Thursday through next Wednesday including; public concerts, static aerial and ground asset displays, ship tours, an air show and ceremonies across the city. Most events will be free, and open to the public.
