Navy unveils its improved Web site for career management
June 11, 2005
ARLINGTON, Va. — The Navy’s computerized enlisted assignment system just got a little more user-friendly, with new features that make it easier for sailors to find the perfect follow-on assignment, according to naval officials.
Dubbed “Spiral 2.5,” the program is the latest update of the Navy’s Job Advertising and Selection System (JASS) Career Management System. The system allows sailors looking for new jobs to log into the system and search, view and then apply for the full spectrum of follow-on assignments they are eligible for, based on factors such as job, rank, and special skills like additional languages or security clearances, said Lt. Sarah Self-Kyler, a Navy spokeswoman.
The system also allows sailors to check their personnel records to make sure they are accurate and up to date, ensuring maximum eligibility for the widest range of assignments.
The Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tenn., began using JCMS in October 2004. The system became available Navy-wide earlier this month. Before the system was developed, sailors had to depend almost entirely on “detailers” to manage their Navy careers.
While detailers still play an important role in Navy’s personnel management structure, the computerized programs gives sailors a much more active role in the assignment process, Self-Kyler said.
Highlights of the newly updated JASS Career Management System include a new information column for female sailors on the “job search” page; personalized detailer contact information; a feature allowing sailors to navigate back and forth between certain pages without having to log out and back in again; and a wider range of personnel records on the Sailor Personnel Detail page that sailors can double-check to ensure for accuracy.
For example, sailors can now quickly look up both work and family-related statuses, such as their Perform to Serve (PTS) status and exceptional family member classification and update or review date, Navy officials said.
The updated detail page also lets sailors check important security clearance information, such as security clearance eligibility, the date their clearance was completed, security clearance access, and security clearance review date.
