The Navy will commission its newest guided-missile destroyer, the USS Rafael Peralta, during a ceremony Saturday at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego.

The ship’s namesake is Marine Sgt. Rafael Peralta, who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for saving the lives of fellow Marines during the second battle of Fallujah in 2004, according to a Navy statement.

Gen. Robert Neller, commandant of the Marine Corps, will deliver the ceremony’s principal address. Rosa Maria Peralta, Sgt. Peralta’s mother, will serve as the ship’s sponsor.

USS Rafael Peralta will become the Navy’s 64th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
