Navy Secretary Ray Mabus arrived Friday in Tokyo for meetings with senior Japanese defense officials, according to Navy officials.

Mabus landed at Naval Air Facility Atsugi en route to the Japanese capital, according to information provided by the installation’s public affairs office.

The visit comes as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe meets with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, marking a breakthrough in Kremlin efforts to end Russia’s two-year isolation over Ukraine and ahead of a U.S. presidential visit to Japan for the Group of Seven summit this month.
