NAPLES, Italy — A Bahrain-based Navy officer died Sept. 7 at a base gym as the result of cardiac arrest, according to Navy records.

Cmdr. James K. Crawford, 50, of East Concord, N.Y., was exercising at about 3 p.m. at the Naval Support Activity Bahrain base when he collapsed and was unresponsive, according to a Navy report obtained by Stars and Stripes.

Attempts to resuscitate Crawford began at the gym, according to the report. He was transported to the base’s clinic and then on to a hospital in the city of Manama, where he was pronounced dead, the report states.

Crawford was assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, and was supporting operations at the Combined Maritime Forces Coalition Coordination Center in Bahrain, home of U.S. 5th Fleet.
