Navy offers online service to assist in moving of household goods
Navy sailors and their families can now arrange household goods shipments from Bahrain, Diego Garcia or Guam online instead of making a trip to their local personal property office.
SMART WebMove allows eligible Navy personnel to arrange routine moves from their current duty station to their new base in the continental United States and some overseas locations.
In the past, most sailors had to make an appointment with the local personal property office to fill out a lot of paperwork before shipping their household goods.
The SMART WebMove program, managed by the Naval Supply Systems Command, aims to make the application process easier and faster.
Sailors can access SMART WebMove at www.smartwebmove.navsup.navy.mil. New users must set up a user account before getting started. Then, they enter the pick-up and delivery information. A personal property office representative will go through the application and notify the servicemember by e-mail of the pick-up date and the name of the moving company.
Permanent-change-of-station orders, proof of dependents and an e-mail address are required. If someone else is arranging the move, a current power of attorney will be needed.
More than 36,000 applicants have been processed using SMART WebMove since the Navy rolled it out in 2001, according to a Naval Supply Systems Command press release. The program is available at bases in the United States, Japan, Singapore, Italy, Portugal, Spain, England, Iceland, Greece and Cuba.
