Navy IDs sailor killed in Sigonella motorcycle accident
NAPLES, Italy — The Navy on Tuesday released the name of a sailor killed in a motorcycle accident last weekend in Sigonella, Sicily.
Petty Officer 1st Class Maurice Lee Quidley, Jr., 36, died from injuries sustained when his motorcycle hit a roadside guardrail shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, near the Navy’s Mineo housing complex where he lived.
Quidley, a 16-year Navy veteran, was an explosive ordnance disposal technician assigned to U.S. 6th Fleet Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Eight based at Naval Air Station Sigonella.
Italian emergency medical personnel pronounced Quidley dead at the scene of the accident. He was then transported to the naval hospital on Sigonella’s support base by Navy emergency medical personnel. No other individuals were involved in the accident, according to Navy officials.
U.S. Navy and Italian officials are investigating the accident. The command in Sigonella is planning a memorial service but no details have been finalized.
