ARLINGTON, Va. — The Navy has identified three sailors killed Tuesday when their helicopter crashed in the Pacific Ocean off Colombia.

In a news release Thursday, the Navy identified the three crewmembers as:

Lt. Christopher H. Snyder, 28, pilot, of Plainsboro, N.J.Lt. j.g. Nicholas J. Juron, 25, pilot, of Lexington Park, Md.Aviation Warfare Systems Operator Second Class John N. Kaye III, 22, of Waterloo, Iowa.Their helicopter had just left the deck of the frigate USS De Wert on a counterdrug mission when it crashed Tuesday morning.

Search and rescue efforts ended Tuesday evening after the U.S. and Colombian navies failed to find the three crewmembers.

Navy commanders decide when to end search and rescue effort based on how long people can survive in water given temperature and sea state, a Navy official said.

The Navy is now considering whether to launch a recovery effort.
