Navy helping with aid effort following typhoon
TOKYO — Navy helicopters from Guam and sailors from the USNS Alan Shepard are helping residents in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the aftermath of super typhoon Choi-Wan, according to the U.S. Navy.
Two helicopters from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25, stationed at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, arrived Thursday on the islands of Alamagan and Agrihan, according to a release. The islands are about 150 miles north of Saipan.
The helos are ferrying supplies from the Alan Shepard, a cargo and ammunition ship, including more than 260 gallons of water, 50 pounds of rice and other items, the release said. The help came after a request from the governor of Saipan, the release said.
