NAPLES, Italy — The front gate of the Navy’s Capodichino base was shut down Friday morning due to a suspicious vehicle.

U.S. and Italian personnel responded to reports of suspected explosives in the vehicle after a random gate inspection at about 8:15 a.m., prompting a closure of the front entrance to the base, said Navy spokesman Lt. Matt Gill.

Citing security concerns, Gill would not elaborate on the suspected explosives.

Authorities deemed the vehicle safe by 11 a.m. and the gate was reopened, he said.
