Navy announces bonus revisions for re-ups
NAPLES, Italy — The Navy has announced more revisions to its Selective Re-enlistment Bonus program. Some sailors are no longer eligible for the re-up bonuses, while others may pocket up to $90,000, based on their job skill and time in service.
"There are a total of 51 changes to the program," said Sharon Anderson, a spokeswoman for chief of Navy personnel. "As we meet our retention goals, we can remove job specialties [from the bonus program] and we can also add them as needed."
Anderson said that seven bonuses were removed and two were added, while four bonuses were decreased and 38 increased.
The changes, announced last week, don’t apply across entire career fields. They also take into account specialized skills along with time in service.
For example, the two additions to the program are air traffic controllers with fewer than six years of service, and independent duty corpsmen (medics) serving on ships with 10 to 14 years of service.
Award increases went into effect last week, but decreased award levels aren’t in effect until Feb. 20.
Although NAVADMIN 250/09 indicates which ratings, specialties and time-in-service zones are eligible, the exact dollar figures aren’t spelled out. Sailors should check with their career counselors to see if they’re eligible for a bonus, how much extra money they are entitled to and deadlines to submit re-enlistment paperwork.
SRB funding is limited, Anderson said, so the bureau encourages servicemembers to submit their paperwork as soon as possible.
