One person was killed Tuesday afternoon during a “security incident” on the Marine Corps’ Camp Lejeune that forced the lockdown of on-base schools and day cares, officials at the North Carolina base said.

The person was killed by “law enforcement actions” during the incident before 2:30 p.m. EST near Tarawa Terrace Elementary School, according to a Camp Lejeune news release. Base officials declined to provide specific details about the incident, citing an ongoing investigation.

Tarawa Terrace, a Department of Defense Education Activity school on northern Camp Lejeune, and other on-base schools and child development centers were locked down during the law enforcement response to the incident “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the release. Schools and day cares, including Tarawa Terrace, resumed normal activities after 3 p.m., Tuesday, officials said.

No students, children or school staff members were harmed in the incident, according to the release.

It was not clear Wednesday what led to the law enforcement response. Camp Lejeune officials did not immediately respond to a request for further details, including whether any Marines or other service members were involved in the incident.

Officials said the deceased individual’s name would be released after next-of-kin notification.
