A Marine assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force died from injuries sustained in a tactical vehicle “mishap” at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in Southern California, the Marines said late Wednesday.

The incident occurred at about 1:45 p.m. PT on Wednesday, according to a statement from I MEF.

The Marines did not disclose details of the incident, the type of vehicle or if any other personnel were injured. The rank and unit of the Marine killed in the incident were also not released.

The name of the deceased is being withheld until 24 hours after the Marine’s next of kin are notified.

The Marines said the incident is under investigation.

I MEF is the Marine Corps’ largest Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF), comprised of about 53,000 Marines and sailors, according to the Marine Corps website.

Personnel are drawn from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, the Marine Air-Ground Combat Center at 29 Palms in California. Air support is drawn from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in California, and MCAS Yuma, Ariz.

I MEF consists of the I MEF Headquarters Group, 1st Marine Division, 3rd Marine Air Wing and 1st Marine Logistics Group. It is the largest air-ground task force in the Marine Corps and based at Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego. I MEF also draws personnel based in Arizona, according to the Marine Corps website.
