A fire last week scorched about 400,000 square feet at a Marine Corps rifle range in northern Okinawa, according to the prefectural government.

The blaze broke out at 5:32 p.m. Oct. 10 on Range 2 at Camp Hansen during routine training, a spokeswoman with the Military Base Affairs Division said by phone Thursday. No injuries or structural damage were reported.

The fire burned for about two hours before going out on its own, the spokeswoman said. It was the ninth reported fire on a rifle range at Hansen this year, she added.

Some Japanese government officials speak to the media only on condition of anonymity.

Marine Corps Installations Pacific spokeswoman 1st Lt. Kelsey Enlow confirmed the fire in an email Thursday but declined to answer other questions due to the ongoing government shutdown.

The incident follows two other fires at the same range this year.

On the morning of May 23, a blaze burned more than 215,000 square feet before going out on its own within 90 minutes, the command said at the time. On April 4, a fire scorched a similarly sized area before being extinguished the following morning.
