One of the Coast Guard’s primary training centers has renamed its aquatic training facility in honor of a Coast Guard rescue swimmer who died during a rescue operation this year.
The aquatic facility at Coast Guard Training Center Cape May in New Jersey was dedicated last week in memory of AST2 Tyler J. Jaggers, according to a service news release. His family, fellow Coast Guardsmen and training center personnel gathered to remember his service and legacy.
“Tyler Jaggers embodied what we endeavor to instill in every recruit who passes through Training Center Cape May; courage, selflessness and an unwavering commitment to others,” Capt. Amanda Lee, commanding officer of Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, said in the Thursday release.
Jaggers was part of an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew responding to a medical emergency aboard a commercial vessel off the coast of Washington on Feb. 27. He died from injuries sustained during the rescue operation.
The training pool is a key part of Coast Guard basic training, where every recruit learns water survival skills needed to work in the maritime environment, according to the release.
“Every Coast Guard member begins their journey here, and every recruit trains in this pool. From this day forward, they will learn Tyler’s name, understand his sacrifice, and be reminded that the skills they develop here may one day be called upon to save a life,” Lee said.
