Coast Guard rescues 2 people near Ormond Beach after vessel power outage

The U.S. Coast Guard located and rescued two mariners aboard a disabled vessel approximately 18 miles east of Ormond Beach, Fla. on Tuesday.

A Station Ponce De Leon boat crew arrived on the scene and confirmed the mariners were in good health, according to a service news release.

The crew took the vessel, which experienced a complete power outage, to Ponce Inlet before being transferred to commercial salvage closer to shore

“We are pleased this case had a positive outcome and that both mariners were found safe,” said Lt. Jason Raymond, Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville search and rescue mission coordinator.

The two mariners left for an offshore fishing trip from Ponce Inlet on a 25-foot recreational vessel. Sector Jacksonville watchstanders were alerted after the vessel failed to return to the town as scheduled.

The watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of a Station Ponce De Leon boat crew and a C-27 aircrew to conduct the search.

During the search, the vessel’s operator was able contact and notify the reporting source that the vessel was disabled and in need of assistance. The watchstanders located their position afterward based on the call.

“This case highlights the importance of maintaining reliable communication with family or friends ashore and ensuring someone knows your float plan before heading offshore,” Raymond said.
