CLEVELAND (Tribune News Service) — A 72-year-old man was taken into custody Friday after authorities said he breached the security perimeter at the U.S. Coast Guard Station Cleveland Harbor, prompting a response from federal and local law enforcement agencies.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, the incident happened at approximately 11:30 a.m. when the man drove through the station’s entrance gate after following a contractor’s vehicle onto the property.
The man was initially apprehended by Coast Guard station personnel before being transferred to the custody of the Cleveland police, the Coast Guard said.
No injuries were reported, and Coast Guard officials said the incident did not affect mission capabilities at the station. Authorities have not released the man’s identity or a possible motive.
The investigation remains ongoing.
“We are grateful that the security incident was quickly contained and resulted in no injuries to our personnel or community members,” Great Lakes District Chief of Staff Capt. Mark Kuperman said in a statement. “We are actively coordinating with law enforcement partners to conduct an investigation and to ensure the safety of our members and community.”
