PRESQUE ISLE HARBOR, Mich. (Tribune News Service) — Three people and a cat had to be rescued from a boat late Monday after it ran aground in Northern Michigan, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The incident occurred near Presque Isle Harbor on a 54-foot boat.
A Coast Guard crew in an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter launched from Air Station Detroit to start the rescue effort.
“The helicopter crew arrived on scene shortly after midnight, where they battled strong winds and breaking waves on the disabled vessel,” the Coast Guard said.
A rescue swimmer was lowered down to the boat. The swimmer triaged the three people on board. The Coast Guard called what ensued a “complex basket recovery,” in which the swimmer loaded two of the people into the rescue basket, which was then hoisted up to the helicopter. A second trip assured the rescue of the remaining person and the feline.
“All survivors, including the cat, were uninjured and safely transported to shore,” the military said.
