A Fort Leavenworth, Kan., soldier is facing a court-martial regarding the shooting death of his infant son in the family’s on-post home.
Spc. Peyton Creel, 23, pleaded not guilty during an arraignment hearing last week. He is charged with murder while engaged in an act inherently dangerous to another as well as the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter by “culpable negligence.”
The baby was shot in the head with a rifle April 28, according to the charge sheet.
Creel will face an enlisted jury panel in January, according to the Army’s court docket.
“The Army takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and is committed to ensuring a fair and impartial process. Spc. Creel is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and is entitled to due process and a robust defense,” according to a statement from Fort Leavenworth.
Creel, a military police officer, has been assigned to the Combined Arms Command Law Enforcement Activity, Special Troops Battalion since January 2025, according to his service record. He joined the Army in December 2021 and is from Dothan, Ala.
