Cavalry unit commander nominated for third star, top job at V Corps

POZNAN, Poland — Army Maj. Gen. Thomas Feltey has been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general and selected to become the next commanding general of V Corps, according to the Defense Department.

Feltey, who currently leads the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, will assume command following Senate confirmation and a formal change of command ceremony, the department said Thursday in a statement.

Headquartered at Fort Knox, Ky., V Corps serves as the Army’s operational headquarters in Europe, supporting U.S. Army Europe and Africa operations, NATO allies and multinational exercises across the region. Its forward headquarters is at Camp Kosciuszko in Poznan.

Feltey would succeed Lt. Gen. Charles Costanza, who has led V Corps during a period of continued expansion of the Army’s presence in Poland.

The hub of U.S. Army Garrison Poland, Camp Kosciuszko has seen rapid development since its establishment three years ago gave the Army its first permanent presence in the country.

In addition, V Corps has experienced an increase in multinational training and deterrence efforts along NATO’s eastern flank.

The alliance and its member countries moved hastily to shore up their militaries after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

Before taking command of the 1st Cavalry Division, Feltey served in a variety of command and staff assignments throughout his Army career.
