GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – German police apprehended a man Tuesday after he attempted to bypass security guards and enter the U.S. Army garrison in Grafenwoehr and then became violent, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred Tuesday morning at the installation’s Gate 3, which is currently serving as a primary access point to the post.
In a statement, Eschenbach police told Stars and Stripes that officers were called after a Syrian man was denied entry to the base and began arguing with security personnel. The man made incoherent statements and became increasingly agitated, the statement said.
The man then moved toward nearby railroad tracks and began throwing rocks and kicking at responding officers, police added. German police were assisted by military police during the incident.
Two officers sustained minor injuries, according to police, who said the man was taken into custody and transported to a district hospital for evaluation.
A video circulating on a local social media page appears to show a German police officer drawing a weapon as the man threw rocks.
As of Wednesday morning, there were no visible changes to security at the gate.
A spokesperson for U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria confirmed that an incident occurred outside the installation at Gate 3, which was temporarily closed.
“The security and safety of our military community is our top priority, and our community members are always reminded to report anything suspicious,” the spokesperson said.
