STUTTGART, Germany — A suspicious package was removed Wednesday from an American military headquarters near Stuttgart, where roads were briefly closed while emergency response personnel cleared the scene, military officials said.

The package was discovered around 8 a.m. near the Panzer Kaserne bowling alley, U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart said in a social media alert.

The garrison referred questions to the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division, which did not immediately respond to a question about the incident.

Located in the suburb of Böblingen, the installation is home to an array of units, including the Marine Corps’ European headquarters and special operations teams.

The area was cordoned off as a precaution, and students at the school nearby were told to stay indoors during the incident. By around 11 a.m., the package was removed and traffic returned to normal, the garrison said.
