AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — An American soldier based at Aviano is recovering after being stabbed outside a nightclub last week in the nearby city of Conegliano.

The unidentified soldier, described by multiple Italian media outlets as a 28-year-old man, was treated for his injuries at a local hospital and is recovering at home, 173rd Airborne Brigade spokeswoman Capt. Jennifer French said.

U.S. military officials are cooperating with Italian investigators, French said, adding that the soldier was off duty at the time. She declined to provide more details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Italian media reports said the stabbing happened in the early morning hours of Dec. 28 outside a private club.

The soldier and a 37-year-old Albanian woman who was with him reportedly were confronted by a group of people who knew the woman. A scuffle broke out and both the American soldier and the woman were injured, reports said.

The soldier was initially thought to be critically injured and was rushed to the hospital for treatment after neighbors were alerted by the woman’s calls for help, according to reports.

Police identified a suspect by reviewing video camera footage of a license plate, according to a report by Virgilio.it on Dec. 29. As of that time, the suspect was still at large.

Conegliano is a city of about 35,000 people roughly 18 miles southwest of Aviano and home to some Americans stationed there.
