GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — A U.S. soldier in southern Germany was seriously injured over the weekend after losing control of his vehicle on slick, snowy roads.

The unidentified 27-year-old was driving his Dodge Challenger on the B85 highway between Pegnitz and Auerbach at 4:25 p.m. Sunday when he lost control due to icy conditions, Pegnitz police said in a statement.

The vehicle then crossed the median and collided with oncoming traffic. The crash site is about 20 miles west of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria’s Tower Barracks in Grafenwoehr.

It’s unclear where the soldier is stationed and what his unit assignment is. A garrison spokeswoman acknowledged receipt of questions Monday but did not immediately provide further information.

The Challenger struck a BMW with three occupants ranging in age from 17 to 21, and another car that was carrying two people, police said. The injuries to those in the other vehicles were minor, according to the statement.

Police assessed the damage from the crash at about $60,000.

At least four other crashes occurred that same day, police said.

The region was pounded last week by bad weather that included freezing temperatures and several inches of snow.

The conditions led to weather advisories on bases in the region and early dismissals for certain soldiers and Defense Department civilians.
