ARLINGTON, Va. — The Army is offering a re-enlistment bonus for active-duty soldiers in 11 more job categories.

In a message dated July 14, Army officials earmarked the military occupational specialties, or MOSs, for a lump-sum selective re-enlistment bonus of as much as $7,500 if they agree to re-enlist for at least three more years.

The MOSs that are eligible for the new bonus are:

13B Cannon Crewman.13M Multiple Launch Rocket System Crewman.13P MLRS/Fire Direction Supervisor.15Q Air Traffic Control Operator.19K M1 Tank Armor Crewman.25P Microwave Systems Operator-Maintainer.25Q Multi-channel Transmission Service Operator-Maintainer.33W Electronic Warfare/Intercept System Repair.63H Track Vehicle Repair.91X Mental Health Specialist.96H Common Ground Station Operator. The new bonuses are reserved for specialists (E-4s), sergeants (E-5) and staff sergeants (E-6), and is effective for soldiers whose current period of enlistment ends before Oct. 1.

The Army uses SRBs, as they are called, to help fill out certain job and rank categories that are short of soldiers.

Soldiers whose enlistment would have been up in fiscal 2004 (Oct. 1, 2003, to Sept. 30, 2004) but who have been unable to leave the Army because they are under stop loss, are also eligible.

Prior-service soldiers who separated from the Army or any other military branch, and who re-enlist within 90 days of their discharge, are also eligible to receive the SRB if they are in the correct MOS, the message said.

The eligibility period for the latest SRB began July 14 and expires on Oct. 1, the message said.

As always, bonuses earned for re-enlisting in a combat zone are tax-free.

The exact amount of SRBs — including the new bonus — is calculated using a somewhat complex “multiplier” formula that progressively rewards soldiers based on how long they have continuously been on active duty.

The total amount of bonus is computed using a soldier’s monthly basic pay at time of discharge, or release from active duty; multiplied by years, or fractions of a year (months) of additional obligated service, multiplied by the SRB multiplier.
