An active-duty airman at Aviano Air Base in northern Italy was pronounced dead at his or her off-base residence Tuesday, base officials announced.

The airman was assigned to the air base’s 31st Fighter Wing, the wing said in a statement.

The airman’s identity was being withheld for 24 hours after next-of-kin notification, it said. Such withholding is in line with standard military procedures.

The death was under investigation, the wing said in a statement posted to social media.

A base official told Stars and Stripes via email that no further information was available as of Tuesday evening but would be provided once it was available for release.

The death is the second fatality of an airman at the base in less than two months.

Members of the base community gathered two weeks ago for a memorial service honoring 24-year-old Airman 1st Class Malachi Robinson, a weapons loader with the 555th Aircraft Maintenance Unit weapons section assigned to the wing’s 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, who died Aug. 8.

Robinson was swimming at Lake Barcis, a nearby Alpine lake, when he was reported missing. His body was recovered that evening, and local authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.
