Aviano airman dies while swimming at Lake Barcis

AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — The identity of an airman who died over the weekend while swimming with friends at a nearby Alpine lake was made public Monday.

Airman 1st Class Malachi Robinson, 24, was a weapons loader assigned to the 31st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, the 31st Fighter Wing said in a statement following notification of next of kin.

During a Saturday evening swim in Lake Barcis, Robinson disappeared under the water and didn’t resurface. Italian rescue personnel responded and his body was later recovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:35 p.m., according to the wing statement.

Italian media reports said swimming is prohibited in the lake, but it is nevertheless a popular recreation area. Trails for hiking and biking run along its brilliant turquoise waters, which are used for canoeing, kayaking and sailing.

In the area where Robinson drowned, the lake is about 20 feet deep, Italian media reported, although drought conditions in the country have significantly reduced water levels in a number of places.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Malachi’s family, friends, teammates and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” wing commander Col. Beau Diers said. “Our hearts are with everyone affected by his loss, and we remain committed to supporting our airmen and their families as we mourn together.”

The wing is working with Italian authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
