A person died Saturday evening at Joint Base San Antonio in Texas after becoming trapped in a vehicle during severe flash flooding, the Texas military base said.
Dr. Kenneth Stuart, a federal civilian employee assigned to 57th Intelligence Squadron, 16th Air Force, was in a vehicle on Hall Street at Lackland Air Force Base. The base fire department responded, and the person was declared dead at the scene, the base said.
“Dr. Stuart was a beloved and respected member of the 57th IS family. He dedicated 32 years in support of our nation and was always committed to helping others and improving our organization,” Lt. Col. Benjamin Secrist, commander of the 57th Intelligence Squadron, said in a statment. “We are deeply saddened by his sudden passing. His leadership and kindness leave a lasting legacy in our squadron. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues at this time.”
The incident is under investigation.
Between 3 and 6 inches of rain fell upstream of the base, according to meteorologists with local TV station KSAT. This caused Leon Creek, which is near Hall Street, to rise about 10 feet.
Lackland Air Force Base is home to the service’s basic training as well as some pilot training.
