Transformer fire knocks out power to FE Warren AFB

A transformer fire on knocked out the power across F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming on Saturday night, and it had not been restored as of Sunday, according to the base.

The 90th Missile Wing continues to work with teams from the Western Area Power Administration and High West Energy “to restore lost power to the installation due to critical components being damaged at the substation,” the base said in a Facebook post Sunday. Base leaders are “tracking this closely and keeping a close eye on the power situation, keeping in mind the safety of our airmen and families who work and live on the installation.”

The base’s latest update was posted just after noon Mountain Time.

“At this time, it is estimated that power will return in the next 12-24 hours. This estimate is subject to change,” the post said.

F.E. Warren is about 3 miles east of Cheyenne. The forecast for Sunday calls for temperatures in the high 80s.

“As temperatures continue to rise, please take steps to stay hydrated and limit prolonged exposure to the heat whenever possible,” the base said. “If you experience safety concerns during this time, please contact your chain of command for assistance.”

F.E. Warren is the headquarters for the 20th Air Force and hosts the 90th Missile Wing, operating LGM-30G Minuteman III ICBMs. The 90th Missile Wing employs approximately 3,361 military members and 964 civilian employees.

Also Saturday, a storm knocked out power temporarily at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona. Power was restored.
