The 8th Fighter Wing is investigating the cause of a recent 11,000-gallon fuel leak at Kunsan Air Base in South Korea.

Airmen of the 8th Logistics Readiness Squadron and 8th Civil Engineer Squadron discovered the leak on Jan. 26, according to a statement posted Wednesday on the installation’s website.

The fuel leaked from a tank but was rapidly contained, wing spokeswoman Capt. Samantha Perez said by phone Friday.

“Our trained experts took quick action to prevent any further impacts to the installation, and the contaminants are currently contained to the immediate site,” the statement said. “Our teams will continue to monitor the site as restoration efforts continue.”

The leak posed no threat to drinking water, which is supplied from an off-base source, or immediate risk to the health or safety of anyone at Kunsan or in surrounding communities, according to the wing.

“Our dedicated teams at Kunsan Air Base are working diligently to clean up the spill site in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and sound environmental practices,” the statement said. “We are committed to being good stewards of the environment and to protecting the health of our personnel and the surrounding communities.”

More than 2,800 airmen and civilians are assigned to Kunsan, which is part of 7th Air Force headquartered at Osan Air Base, South Korea.
