A highlight of the annual events honoring those who served their nation in war and peace was a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, at which keynote speaker retired Gen. Colin Powell said that the memorial's now-iconic Wall "came at a time when we desperately needed something to help heal a nation that had been deeply wounded by Vietnam and by other traumatic events in the 1960s and 1970s."
